In Pedro Salazar's Words — on Houston Outdoor Living

"Performance is elegance. When a backyard functions quietly — drains correctly, stays cool, requires almost no maintenance — that is true luxury. Clients don't always understand that until they've lived with it for a summer."

"We’ve stripped out composite decks in River Oaks and West University that were less than eight years old — warped, delaminated, termite-damaged. The replacement material was always Brazilian hardwood. The second time, clients understand."

"The pool deck is often where we have the most productive drainage conversation with clients. You build a permeable deck around the pool, you solve the drainage problem for the whole backyard at the same time."

"Native plants are the most honest sustainability move you can make in a Houston backyard. Once they’re established, you stop watering them. That’s it. You stop. The savings on irrigation over five years often exceeds the cost of the plants themselves."

"Shade and ventilation engineering are prerequisites for functional outdoor space in Houston. Without them, the space is unusable for six months of the year — no matter how beautiful the materials are."

About Pedro Salazar — Houston Outdoor Living

Pedro Salazar has spent over a decade building outdoor living environments in Houston's most demanding residential markets. As co-founder and construction principal of Right Angle Home & Outdoors, he translates the firm's drainage-first engineering philosophy into on-site execution — managing material procurement, subcontractor coordination, installation sequencing, and quality control across every project.

His construction perspective on Houston is direct: most outdoor projects fail because they're built for how a backyard looks on day one rather than how it performs in year five. The Houston climate — extreme heat, heavy rainfall, clay soil movement, and termite pressure — punishes shortcuts in base preparation, material selection, and drainage engineering. Pedro's role is to make sure those shortcuts don't happen.

Pedro leads construction on Right Angle's full service range: permeable paver patios and driveways (Pavestone, Belgard); Brazilian hardwood decks (Ipe, Garapa, Massaranduba); cedar pergolas and covered outdoor rooms engineered for Zone 9B wind loads; pool remodeling and permeable pool deck systems; retaining walls and drainage infrastructure; and complete backyard transformations from site clearing through final planting.

He brings particular expertise to pool deck construction — specifically permeable paver pool decks that simultaneously solve the drainage problems endemic to Houston's flat, clay-heavy lots. His observation that permeable pool decks often resolve a property's entire drainage conversation in a single project has become one of Right Angle's most effective client conversations.

Right Angle serves Heights (77007, 77008, 77009), River Oaks (77019), West University (77005), Montrose (77006), Memorial (77024, 77079), Garden Oaks, Bellaire, Spring Branch (77042), and the Galleria corridor (77056, 77027) — and Pedro has active project experience in every one of these neighborhoods.
