    Lighter than Ipe, easier to work, and mills cleanly. Good rot resistance and natural oil content. The value pick in the tropical hardwood category—excellent performance at a lower price point than Ipe.

    Massaranduba (Brazilian Redwood)

    Color: Deep reddish brown

    Nearly as hard as Ipe with a distinctive reddish grain. Excellent rot and insect resistance. Very stable in Houston's humidity cycles. A strong alternative when Ipe is out of stock or over budget.

    Installation Details That Matter in Houston

    Hidden Fasteners

    We use Ipe Clip or equivalent hidden fastener systems that grip the board edge rather than face-fastening. Allows for seasonal movement without cupping, eliminates fastener holes that collect water.

    Pre-Drilling

    Mandatory on Ipe and Massaranduba. Pilot holes sized for the fastener shank prevent splitting and ensure full seating. Standard fasteners will break before they penetrate without pre-drilling.

    Board Spacing

    3/16" to 1/4" between boards to accommodate lateral movement and allow drainage. Too tight and boards cup; too wide and debris accumulates and feet catch edges.

    Substructure Airflow

    Joist spacing and clearance that allows cross-ventilation beneath the deck. Trapped moisture under tropical hardwoods accelerates the one failure mode they can't resist: chronic wetness from below.

    Stainless Fasteners

    Standard galvanized fasteners cause tannin staining on high-oil tropical species. We use stainless steel or composite fastener systems that won't corrode or stain.

    Penetrating Oil Finish

    Penofin Hardwood or similar products that penetrate the dense grain rather than film-forming finishes that would peel. Annual application for color; every 2–3 years minimum for protection.

    How does Ipe compare to composite decking in Houston's climate?

    Ipe dramatically outperforms composite decking on heat retention, UV stability, and long-term aesthetics. Composite decking can become uncomfortably hot to stand on barefoot in Houston summers. It also tends to fade and develop surface texture issues under our UV load within 5–10 years. Ipe ages to a silver-gray if left unfinished, or maintains its dark color with periodic oiling—both are beautiful outcomes. Structurally, Ipe will outlast any composite product.

    Why does Brazilian hardwood require pre-drilling?

    The density of Ipe and Massaranduba is so high that standard screws will split the board face or break before seating if driven without a pilot hole. Pre-drilling with a pilot bit sized for the fastener shank is mandatory. We use stainless steel or composite fastener systems to avoid corrosion staining, which can be a problem with standard galvanized fasteners on high-tannin tropical species.

    Do Brazilian hardwoods need to be treated for termites in Houston?

    No treatment is needed—the natural oil content and density of tropical hardwoods make them highly resistant to Formosan subterranean termites, which are the primary concern in Houston. This is one of the significant advantages over pressure-treated pine, which does require chemical treatment to achieve similar resistance and degrades faster in Houston's humidity.

    Can I install Brazilian hardwood over an existing deck frame?

    Often yes, if the existing frame is structurally sound and properly spaced. We assess joist spacing, condition, and connection integrity before installing new decking over existing framing. Houston's humidity means older PT lumber substructures may have moisture damage that needs to be addressed before new decking goes down.

    What's the spacing between boards on a Brazilian hardwood deck?
