Pergolas and Patio Covers in Garden Oaks

Under tall trees, an open pergola can be mostly about framing a space; out in a sunny back lawn it is about shade. If you want to sit outside in rain, that is a roofed cover — a different build.

Placing it on a tree-shaded lot

    Orientation & canopy

Watch where afternoon sun actually lands; an existing canopy may already shade the spot you are considering.

    Furniture & use

Size the structure to the table, sofa or kitchen it covers, plus walking room.

    Posts & roots

Post footings are placed around roots. Overhead branches also limit height and clearance.

    Electrical

Fans, lights and outlets mean wiring runs that are best planned before the build.

    Budget and cost drivers

The budget tool uses $75 per square foot for a cedar pergola. A 12×16 ft footprint (192 sq ft) comes to $14,400 as an illustrative planning amount — open cedar only, not a roofed cover or a quote.

    Questions

Does a pergola need a permit?
It depends on size, attachment, roofing and your address. We check the specific scope; a roofed cover is more likely to need review than an open pergola.
Will a pergola keep leaves off?
An open pergola will not. A roofed cover will, but leaves then collect on the roof and in gutters.
Is the budget figure for a patio cover?
No. The $75/sq ft rate is for an open cedar pergola. Roofed covers are quoted per scope.
